Celebrities And Their Wisdom
  12/17/2007 7:38:21 PM

When did celebrities become expert authorities in anything?  Why is it that we embrace what celebrities preach?  I guess in a nation that can have actors as politicians, anything is possible.

Jello has always had commercials.  However, it wasn't cool until Bill Cosby became their spokesperson.  People had purchased underwear.  I am sure Michael Jorden convinced even more to buy Hanes.  Celebrities have put their names on just about anything out there.  However, how much weight are we going to put on what they say?  I have no issues with having celebrities selling Wheaties.  They are actors.  That's what they do.  They appear on commercials, and TV shows.  I do have issues when actors, with no more than a high school diploma, making statements on the environment, politics, religion, etc.

Some how, just because they've played the role on TV or in a movie, it makes them an expert in that area.  I think Pat Sajak says it best.  Celebrities might not be the most informed people on these subject matter.  They also lead a very different life than the rest of us.  Granted, some do study up, and become well-versed in certain topics.  However, we need to be careful in aligning our thoughts with what they say.  Granted, I quoted Ben Stein in my last blog.  However, a simple search will show that he IS a very very smart and educated man.  He DOES know what he's talking about.

Celebrities do have their rights in say anything they want.  They will get their platform from the media.  After all, that's media, the celebrities' soap box.  We just need to exercise our minds a bit.  Is what they say entertainment, no matter how unentertaining it might be, or is there some truth?  Is it an act or is it wisdom?
