Intelligence Being Expelled?
  12/31/2007 1:48:18 PM

After my previous entry on Where Is America Going, I did a bit more research on Ben Stein.  He is definitely a smart person.  He has a new movie that is due out soon.  It's called Expelled.  It deals with the subject of Intelligent Design, a subject that I am very interested in.

I admit that I am no authority on Darwinism, or Intelligent Design for that matter.  However, the mere thought that things happen because of chance, and that only the strong survive, just doesn't make sense to me.  I mean really, if only the strong survive, why is it that there are still so many "weak" animals and plants around?  How is it that the roots of a tree, as weak as it is, can break into sewage pipes and cause toilets to backup?  Why is the common grass on my lawn able to put cracks in my cement driveway?

I guess those Evolutionists need to believe in the survival of the fittest.  By believing in it, and screaming their ideas like a 2-year-old, their ideas would be heard louder than the others, thus making them survive.  What they don't realize is that they are controdicting themselves by preaching their ideas.  If new species happen as a result of chance, then the foundation of everything they believe in is CHANCE.  That means if we are all results of chance, then the words that come out of our mouths can only be explained as chance.  If that's the case, I can't accept anything that is said or taught by any Evolutionist.  Afterall, it's only by chance that they say what they say.  Who knows, tomorrow, by chance, the words that come out of their mouths might just be yet another theory.  Random words formed by Evolutionists can only be excused as garbage.  If you don't agree with me, just exuse my words as random formations of alphabets.  If you agree with me, you must be intelligent.  Intelligent Design should not be expelled.  It should be taught!

Thanks Daniel for your post.  It's interesting that you should bring Scientific Method to support Evolution.  With Evolution, there are definitely some observed data that will suggest its validity.  However, let's look at the underlying DNA, which is also talked about in the page.  How can anyone looking at DNA not come to the conclusion that it's designed?  It's like saying the combination of letters, punctuation marks, spaces that make up this paragraph was not conceived out of thought.  Granted, you might think that of my comments.  However, the simple fact that we can communicate with words suggest that language, written or spoken, was created out of thought, and design.  Each word, sentence, and paragraph has a reason for existance.  Each strand of DNA is more complex than the words we put together.  I would suggest that the foundations and rules that govern the formation of DNA is much more complex than our rules of grammar.  If we can both agree that language could not have happen without thought, how can we dismiss the overwhelming evidence of Intelligent Design behind all of life?  I do not doubt the existance of mutation.  I also agree with you that some stronger traits are less likely to change than others.  I also see the stronger overtaking the weak.  However, there is just too many things that Evolution cannot explain.  In fact, to me, design explains much more of this world than Evolution.

And the example of weak, I just wanted to contrast the strength of concrete against the weakness of grass.  Yet, in this case, the weak wins.  I guess I could have used better examples.

Another thing...  The only room for change in Evolution IS chance.  Since it cannot be design, it has to be random.  I will grant you all the odds in the world in your favor in accordance to your suggestion that it's not as simple as random.  Even at that, it is mathmatically impossible to come up with the DNA combination of a human being based on all of the possible combinations, within the known life time of the whole world, also stated by Evolution believing scientists.  And in that timeframe, not only are there human beings, there are so many spicies of organisms.  If we take the path backwards, and to take your "parent selection" path, that assumption can only mean that the parents can predict the results and have chosen specific descisions.  Even with that given to you, there is still not enough evidence to link everything back to one common beginning.

That brings me to the biggest holes in Evolution which I have problems with.  It still cannot explain the origin of life.  There is no scientific explanation based on Evolution on this.  Since you cannot explain the beginning, then whatever else happens can only be explained as a minor observation, and not the complete package.  Maybe Evolution should not be taught until that can be explain?!

What is science?  Is it the discovery of new things to explain our surroundings, or explaining our surroundings with a combination of facts we already know?  It would be extremely arrogant of the scientific community to say that every thing around us can be explained by things we already know.  That is why I believe we need to keep an open mind on new ideas.

You might want to think that we are living proof of Evolution.  I would hope that the fact we can have this discussion of ideas is a proof of intelligence, and design.  We have decided to take our stands after being exposed to both sides.  That's why I think Intelligent Design should be taught.  I am not suggesting that we take Evolution out.  I am suggesting that after the students are exposed to both camps, they need to explore and decide for themselves.  If there is such overwhelming evidence for Evolution, why should Evolutionists worry about having ID taught?  It should pose as no threat.

I do enjoy the discussion.  Maybe you are able to help shed more light on Evolution for me.  Humor me this.  Try to take the theological suggestions out of ID and explore the possibility of design.  Intelligent is added to suggest that the design had purpose and reason.  Lack of external forces, Thermal Dynamics teaches us that everything moves towards chaos.  It does take something external to pull them together, and in a way that makes sense no less...

Thanks again!

I think there are several misunderstandings in this post, and it may be time to learn a bit more about evolution, natural selection, genetic drift, and the scientific method in general.

First and foremost, I'm not sure where you get this claim of everything being chance. Let's take genetic drift - it describes the observed iterative process of random genetic mutations from a given set of possible choices that are tested with each generation by natural selection that over time can cause changes in the species or even speciation. The only part of this that is random is the sampling of which mutation(s) of the possible set of mutations are chosen, and the possible set is determined by the parent(s), meaning the problem space is quite limited, and I don't think anybody claims this to be a simple random sample - some traits are more likely to change than others. I strongly suggest you read the following and think about how it applies to that which you wrote above:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(statistics)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method

I'm also a little bit confused about what your definition of a weak animal or plant is. The examples you provided don't explain how a tree or grass is considered weak, just how they can do something rather strong such as breaking concrete.

For the record I have talked to many, many people on this subject and not one of them has an issue with new scientific theories - they just have an issue with Intelligent Design because it is not a scientific theory and therefore has no place being taught. If one day it is reworked into a testable hypothesis that can be disproven then I strongly believe it will be taught, assuming it hasn't been proven false.

Hope the above is enlightening!
