BlackBerry Enterprise Server Messages and Internet Service Messages Get Mixed In Messages Folder
  7/24/2008 4:37:53 PM

Got a BlackBerry a few months ago.  Since then, I've been using it with work's Enterprise Server (BES) email connected to our Exchange.  It works great.  Personally, I also have a Gmail account, or Internet Service (BIS) email to the BlackBerry.  For the life of me, I just could not figure out how to have two different icons or folders that will house the emails from each account.

I was pulling hairs for a while.  After some searching, I found Empower's BES MailBox.  It works great.  However, after 14 days of trial, I discovered that it costs $19.95.  Having just purchased the BlackBerry, I was not too happy that after so many generations of being the market leader in mobile email, RIM was not able to provide this function "out-of-the-box."  Determined to figure out, I called T-Mobile customer service several times, and worked with our IT numerous times.  At the end...  still mixed...

I recently found a support page directly from BlackBerry admitting to this limitaion.

Support >> BlackBerry Technical Solution Center >> Doc ID: KB12610

This is from BlackBerryFAQ, one of the common BlackBerry resources.

Good thing I didn't give up.  A bit more searching, I did find a "decent" workaround.  This is posted in

Support >> BlackBerry Technical Solution Center >> Doc ID: KB14683

If you don't want to bother reading from this page, here is what you do.

1.  Go to Messages.
2.  From the menu select Search.
3.  From the Service field, select Desktop or whatever name your company uses for BES.
4.  Save the search.  I entered the Title of BES, and assigned a ShortCut Key.
5.  Now, when I go to the messages, I just hit the ShortCut and all I see is BES mail.

It's not great, but it does work.

After a bit more searching, I fould the following from BlackBerry's site.

Support >> BlackBerry Technical Solution Center >> Doc ID: KB15003

In short, the solution does exist.  However, it HAS to be done on the server.  This usually means no solution for the end user.  Companies with a BES usually means there is a good number of consumers of that BES.  This also means that IT will not make this type of change, which will effect everyone consuming the BES.

Maybe it's just me, but I still think BlackBerry should simply add that ability to the device and let the user decide how they want things to be.
