Rude People Are Not Born Rude
  4/30/2012 12:54:04 AM

I don’t think anyone in this world enjoys interacting with rude people. In the same time, none of us would like to be labeled as rude. However, after today, I am convinced that people are not born rude. They are taught.

This morning, I drove out to our local bakery to get some breakfast. When I arrived, I saw a lady walking from the passenger-side of her minivan to the driver side. I knew she must have just loaded her kid(s) onto the van, and is ready to leave. Since this space was right in front of the bakery, it just made my day. I didn’t mind that she had to take her time because she had kids in the van. I just signaled, and waited for her to pull out. As I waited, a car pulled into the parking lot, and stopped behind me. The driver was a middle-age man. In the back, was a kid about elementary school age, and an elderly woman. As I kept observing, I was able to tell the old woman was the driver’s mom. As I was just there waiting for my space to become available, the man honked at me. Suddenly, my day went from bright sunny day with birds chirping to lightning and thunders. I was like – what’s your hurry? If you don’t want to wait for me, you can always go around me. Just as I was getting angry, the lady pulls out of the space. I glided into what I call the “superstar” spot. As I started to inch forward, the man stepped on the gas, swung a quick U-turn in the parking lot, and pulled into a space in the opposite side, which had been empty even before he came into the lot. He made enough of a show just to make sure I saw.

I walked into the bakery, and picked up a couple of sandwiches. I saw the old lady in the back seat also rushed out, walked into the bakery and grabbed a few pieces of bread. All this time, the only thought that was going through my mind was dude, you have just successfully demonstrated to your kid how to be a rude and obnoxious person. Your kid is going to grow up just like you. As I stood in line to pay, I noticed that the grandma happen to be right behind me. I knew she saw me. I knew that she knows I’m the person her son just honked. Finally, I was next in line. Just as I was about to put my sandwiches on the counter for the cashier, the old lady shoved me aside, and put her tray on the counter. Suddenly, it all made sense. The reason the driver was rude was not because he is a rude person. He was rude because he was raised to be rude. His mother was his example.

So what if you drive a $70,000 car. So what if you live in a gated community. What are you leaving behind for the next generation? What is your legacy? You are either an extremely rude family teaching the next generation to be rude, or I completely misread you, and you are just very hungry. Either way, just want to let the driver behind me know that your kid is going to grow up to be just as rude and obnoxious as you. Good job dad!
