An Eventful Day
  10/10/2011 6:17:28 PM

Yesterday, I, along with some friends joined a 5K race at the Long Beach International Marathon. It started being an exciting morning. We carpooled there. After arrival we saw a huge crowd. We all felt great. Before long, th race started. Runners of every sort charged out of the starting gates. As we stated, I remembered thinking to myself, I feel great. Physically, mentally, weather, everything felt great. As my music played, and the crowd started to spread, I arrived at th 1 mile mark. Suddenly, I felt strong pains in my left knee. I wanted to keep running, but I couldn't. I thought, maybe I can walk it off, and start back again. After a minute of walking, I started again. A couple of steps later, I realized that I was done running. The thought going through my mind at the time was not the pain. It was frustration. I felt great. I had so much energy. My breathing and run were well-paced. Suddenly, I couldn't use all that towards the run. It was like going to the mall with a bag of cash to spend, but the stores were closed. I decided at the time that I would still finish the race.

Two miles of walking later, I arrived at the finish line. After meeting up with my friends, and a 10 minute break, we started to walk towards our car. That's when I started to feel pains coming from my right kee as well. I made my way few blocks, and arrived at the car. 30 minutes later, we decided to stop and grab some breakfast. It was in that parking lot when I realized that I could no longer bear weight on either knees.

As the day progressed, my knees got worse. After dinner, we decided to head to the emergency room. After 3 hours, I am glad that there is no permanent damage. I just need to ice and rest both knees. I started the day wearing a number for the race. I ended the day wearing a number for the emergency room.

Lesson learned - Do not decide to join a 5K 4 days before the race.
