Where Is America Going?
  12/10/2007 5:03:25 PM

This morning, on the radio, Dr. James Dobson of Focus On the Family came on, and read a quote from Ben Stein.  This is a quote from Ben Stein back in 12/18/2005 on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don’t feel threatened. I don’t feel discriminated against. That’s what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, “Merry Christmas” to me. I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If people want a creche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution, and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat.

Has this nation teamed up against all God-fearing people?  I agree with Ben Stein here.  What is political correctness anyway?  What is freedom of speech anyway?  To me, freedom of speech is the ability for anyone to speak their mind.  It's the freedom for anyone to share their ideas.  Some how, this nation, in attempts to do just this, is actually shutting its doors on this freedom.  I have no qualms with anyone choosing not to believe in God.  I have no issues with anyone not accepting my faith or values.  I might not like it if you speak against it.  However, I will respect your right to do so.  In the same way, I expect the same level of respect in return.  America is built as a nation where ideas, philosophies, thought, and believes can be freely expressed and shared.  That foundation is quickly shifting.  Some how, those being labeled as intolerant (God-fearing people) are now being attacked by those that do not believe in God.  Some how, speaking one's mind is now offensive.  This was the reason why our founding fathers left Britan and formed this great nation.  I believe this nation should allow for an open forum where ALL people can express their ideas, and it does.  Having that said, I believe the only explanation why Atheists are trying to restrict "Christian" talk through legislature, is that it is their form of evangelism.  The only way to "preach" the absence of God, is to prevent all who preach God from preaching.  If the government is not to advance ANY religions, it is not to advance Atheism.  It's one thing not to preach anything.  It's another to prevent the preaching of any.  That, in itself, is preaching Atheism.  I know I am not the first in saying that "Atheism" doesn't make any sense.  Its a believe of the lack of God.  The mere definition assumes the existence of God.  Anyway, why should they fear what we say?  Why should they care about us saying "Merry Christmas" when they do not believe in Christ, or his existence?  Is it an oxymoron for an Atheist to say "bless you" to someone that sneezes?  It is, for the lack of a better word, STUPID to form legislation against anyone saying that they are idiots.  If they don't believe what I say, they can simply dismiss it, or say something to disprove me.  If they go out of their way to keep me from saying what I say, or to keep me from simply wishing someone "Merry Christmas," it's not that they don't agree with my believes.  They flat-out hate what I preach.  To keep me from saying nice things is just an act of hate in itself.  And they call what I speak hate speech.
