Software and Medicine
  8/23/2007 9:45:47 AM

When we are sick, it's natural that we either go to the doctors or reach for the next OTC medicine.  In the back of our minds, we know that the doctors have been through years of training.  We know the pills we take come from companies with more PHD's than we can count, backed by the close examinations of FDA.  Either way, we do not go to the doctors, or take any pills unless we are sick.

However, we daily pickup electronic products and gadgets, and without knowing, are held hostage by the software designers of these products.  We are told by Apple that a clockwise finger action on the iPod means you want to turn up the volume.  We are told by Microsoft that when you use Vista, the new and improved start button, will still be in the lower right hand corner.  We are told by Google and Yahoo that when you search for something, you will find thousands of things you don't need.  Even what appears to be optional customizations and configuations are dictated by software engineers.  Even our cars and phones, cell and land-line, are controlle by software.  We are becoming a society governed by software.

What's even more scary, continuing my previous entry, Lifetime Student, being in the technical world, I know the amount of training, or lack of, exists.  So many of the smart programmers out there litterally "learn on their own."  In fact, it's something to put on the resume.  If you have the ability to learn how to program on your own, it's an asset.  In the world of medicine, we would never ever go to a doctor for ANY treatment, if he claims that he learned how to perform specific operations on his own.  Common sense tells us that's just stupid.  You never trust your health, lead along your life, to a doctor that learned how to perform bypasses by Gooling at night in his spare time.

For some reason, those of us in the technical world, are expected to stay updated on the latest technology without anyone paying a dime on training us.  Another words, those that hold the key in deciding our daily routines and actions, are doing it with ideas they found on the web, from others that did the same.

That's an extremely scary thought.  However, since the whole world seems to be fine with it, then maybe we need to rethink some things.  Try to follow my logic here...

1.  People are fine with the way the world works now, in terms of software created by our community.
2.  Within our community, we are considered to be smarter or brighter if we can learn on our won.
3.  Doctors can't be trusted when they learn on their own.
4.  Everyone is complaining on the cost of health care.

Conclusion: Pay the software guy more than the doctors!  If not, maybe we will write software to convince you to...
