Chinese IME for Android
  6/3/2011 4:05:36 PM

I recently got a new Asus Eee Pad Transformer. I have to admit that I am enjoying it quite a bit. One thing that I had been struggling with has been the Chinese input. I had gotten too used to the HTC keyboard on my phone. One thing that got me somewhat upset is that Asus actually has a great Chinese keyboard that ships with the device. Unfortunately, it's only visible if the UI is set to Chinese. I need my English UI. Typing Chinese is a secondary, but required function. That's when I decided to go on a quest.

At first, I decided to try 注音倉頡輸入法, found in the Android Market. It's not a bad IME in any sense. However, it just didn't work well for me.

After more searching, I came across Lime Chinese IME/Lime HD Chinese IME. I have to say that it took a bit of time to setup. The instructions are ok. They are in Chinese. Once I got things setup, I was surprised how well this IME works. The all-in-one keyboard can handle both English and Chinese very well. Unlike the other keyboards I have used in the past, it works in English mode and Mixed mode. In the Mixed mode, it is able to input both English and Chinese without the need to switch keyboards! That's awesome! The only minor complaint is from the mixed mode, it takes quite a few clicks to get to the symbols list. However, most of the common symbols are available from the "shift" mode.

It's a definite thumbs-up from me!

-- Update --

I recently realized that I could have been using the Asus Chinese keyboard with the English UI. I just needed to uncheck the option to limit the keyboard selection by UI language.

Another side note... When docked into the docking keyboard, my fingers can really fly.  However, the English spell check goes away. Currently, all mobile devices rely on the dictionary of the soft keyboard for all its spell check.  Since the soft keyboard does not appear when docked, the spell check function goes away.  Hopefully, the 3.2 update will fix this.
