Chick-Fil-A and Swimming
  8/5/2012 2:06:34 AM

In the wake of the recent Chick-Fil-A news wave, I couldn’t help but want to also voice my thoughts. While many talk about the legal aspects of Dan Cathy’s First Amendment rights, and the LGBT community’s reaction, many misunderstandings and misdirected emotions are left unaddressed.

Though both sides hurl passionate words at each other, I still feel that the majority of the people are civil and courteous. While I cannot speak for all Christians, as one, I believe I might be able to shed some light on the things we say and do.

In the spirit of the Olympics, I thought I could use swimming to describe this whole situation. Imagine all of us are in one giant pool. We are all swimming towards the other end. Some are as fit as Phelps, the operative word being some. Some are in there with their rubber duckies. Some decide that they’re going to swim across the lanes. Some feel that as long as they don’t get in someone else’s way, they’re good. Some are in there wondering why the Jacuzzi is so cold. Some are super competitive, and speed down the lanes with flippers on. See, that’s the thing. Christians believe in all our hearts that there is One greater than the pool we are in, and that there are established rules to swim by. We believe the Bible not only gives us the list of rules, it also tells us how to swim. Most important of all, it tells us of the One that made the pool and the rules. This knowledge or faith doesn’t make us any better. It does, however, make us aware that someone else is greater. To call myself a Christian, I know that it’s not how good of a person I am. It is because of what Jesus has done on the cross for me. So, back to the pool… When Christians speak up about the rules of the pool, please do not misread our intensions. We are not saying we are right, and you are wrong. We simply do not want anyone disqualified. After all, we were once those that swam across the lanes, or swam with flippers on. We all had to learn to take our flippers off and to stay in our lanes. We are thankful that someone told us. We just want to share the rules so that no one is thrown out.

Now you may say this is my faith. What you believe is that we are not in a pool, and that no rules exist. I would simply say that we are all free to make our decisions. If you are right, then when I die, no harm done. I just spent my life swimming in the kiddy pool. But if my faith happens to be right, then we all have to face the One that is greater than us all. I just don’t want to see any disqualified.

One other thing, just because we might not agree on something doesn’t mean I hate you. None of us agree on everything. If disagreement means hate, then there would be a lot of hateful people in this world.
