I am quite fed up with people calling themselves victims. Granted, there is still a great deal of injustice and crime. As a result, there are victims. However, what I do not get is why do some people confuse consequence with victimization.
Last night, during one of our visits to California Adventure, we were faced with a scene that got me really worked up. In anticipation for the new World of Colors show, we waited patiently in line for 2 hours. This is not unheard of when it comes to new attractions at Disneyland/CA Adventure during Summer or Christmas time. We paid our dues, as did other families with excited children. Finally, when it was time, we were led to a roped off area in preparation for the show. While we waited for others to file into their allowed regions, we noticed a family, which we had not seen in line, dug under the ropes and crowded in behind us. The official word from the Disney Cast Member was the people in line would have first picks. The late comers would take their chances. As we stood by the bridge, we noticed a little head with Mickey ears started to burl between myself and my wife. We are usually pretty friendly people. When people ask nicely, we would usually make room for little kids since they don't really get in our way. This one was different. Instead of asking, he just tried to work his way in. In doing so, his hands were reaching in some inappropriate places, if you know what I mean. Instead of getting mad at the kid, we just mumbled to ourselves, wondering why the parents didn't say anything. Instead, all we heard was the mother laughing at her son, and where his hands were. After this had gone on for a while, I finally got fed up. As I was turning around to ask the parents to watch their kids, the father said in a confronting voice, "could you just let the kid stand in front of you? I don't know about your culture, but at least, with our culture, we help people that are less fortunate than we are." I could not believe what I heard. I just turned to him and said, "we've been waiting in line for the past 2 hours."
Thinking to myself, what do you mean, "in my culture" and "I don't know about yours." First off, I did not see you as someone of another culture. I saw you as another family trying to have a good time. That was a very discriminatory remark that you made. Well, since you said you didn't know about our culture, let me tell you about our culture. In our culture, we have manners. In our culture, we line up. In our culture, we educate and discipline our kids. When asking for a favor, in our culture, we ask nicely. In our culture, we don't say negative things about other people's culture. Just because you have kids, does not mean you do not have to line up like everyone else. It's people like these that give foreigners a bad name.
While we are at it, what do you mean by "less fortunate?" While we paid our dues in line, where were you? How in the world does this make you less fortunate? Cutting in line was a result of not being able to wait in line? Some one did something to you such that you could not wait in line like the rest of the families? Waiting in the back has nothing to do with who you are. Waiting in the back has everything to do with your not lining up. Why would you automatically call yourself a victim when no one did you any injustice. Are you trying to create a culture of self-victimization? Are you going to teach your kids that they are less fortunate than the others? Are you telling them that no matter what they do, just whip out the victim card, and they can get their way? Are you just raising another generation of victims? If that's the case, your kids will just grow up, not knowing how to follow instructions. Your kids will grow up thinking that they are less than others. Your kids are going to grow up with people not giving them opportunities. That is not a result of victimization. That is a simple consequence. | |
