Smoke and Mirrors

If you ask me, I am quite fed up with people putting on a show. If you are selling entertainment, be upfront about it, and call it for what it is.

Recently, a friend was telling us a story of her 3-year-old daughter. Her favorite food is dim sum. She was playing at home one day by herself. The parents were not paying too much attention. She walks over with a push cart. She asked if they wanted shrimp dumplings. They played along and said yes. She then handed them a plate with some things on it. She then asked if they wanted it cut. She then got her safety scissors and cut the "shrimp dumplings." After serving the parents, she pulls out her stamp and marks down how many servings of food they got. She got everything down to the last detail, except the actual shrimp dumplings.

That got me thinking. All this may be fine for a 3-year-old in her make-believe restaurant. However, I am so fed up with people claiming to be providing a great service, but yet, at the end of the day, they are just going through the motions. Take my house for example. The handyman that put in the windows went through the motions of installing the windows, but lacked the substance of waterproofing. Another trend that annoys me is a recent surge of restaurants trying to copy the decor of more upscale places, but fail to provide good service or good food. A good friend often says, "good from far, but far from good!" So true!!

Lastly, what really ticks me off is a so-called teacher/expert who is nothing more than self-proclaimed. Instead of spending time becoming the subject matter expert, they spend their time observing why others succeed. There is nothing wrong with learning from others. It becomes a problem when their focus is the decor and not the substance. I can't stand it when they try to talk other's talk but can't walk other's walk.

I just hope I have enough sense to never do that. I guess I also need more sense to see things for what they are, smoke and mirrors.
