| VPN Using Cisco SOHO Routers

Recently, I’ve been looking for a way to setup a simple VPN connection between two points. I was looking for an inexpensive, off-the-shelf solution. I already had a Linksys/Cisco RVS 4000. For the other end of the tunnel, I was looking to purchase another home office router, like the Cisco RV110W. I looked everywhere, but have not been successful determining if this was possible or not. As a result, I had to try on my own.
Despite what the Cisco packaging claims, these routers were quite limited in what they offered. Let me offer this simple breakdown of what these two do offer.

If you were to pick up a Cisco Router, the package would say that it offers the ability for your home to be connected to your office. This would only be true if your office used IP Sec. If you have a small business, and have one of these SOHO routers, then you are out of luck. This package also says that it enables travelers to access their work files remotely. Well, this is somewhat true.
Both routers do support Cisco’s own QuickVPN. This requires users to install Cisco’s own QuickVPN client. While the routers can live up to its claim of making VPN connections remotely, QuickVPN has one major flaw. That is, it has problems working behind certain routers, Cisco routers included. This mean, if I am behind a RV110W, I cannot connect to the RVS 4000 using QuickVPN! How stupid is that!? The RV110W does offer PPTP, which is one step better. It will allow a computer from behind the RVS 4000 to connect to it. There was no way for an entire network to be connected via one tunnel.
Either way, from what I have found, there is just no way to use these routers to establish VPN connections between two points. I cannot use either as a SOHO work router, offering VPN to remote users. I cannot establish a VPN connection from my home to my work, if both are Cisco SOHO solutions. I’m sure Cisco has enterprise solutions that can work. However, for small businesses or home use, they’ve left me hanging, now with two VPN routers that don’t talk to each other. | |
