The Vegas Sandwich
  5/1/2013 5:45:36 PM

Not long ago, I visited Las Vegas with some friends. We've heard of the sandwich trick before, but have never tried it. This time, we decided to give it a shot. Here's what happened.

Booking
We've stayed in quite a few different hotels when we visited Vegas in the past. This time, to save a few bucks, we decided to book a slightly older place. The room was only $25/night with family and friends promotion plus $18 resort fee. (Resort fee - another topic, another time...) So both of us booked 2 nights.

Arrival
My friend got there before I did. Upon check-in, he presented his sandwich, and asked about the complementary upgrade. They upgraded him to a room on the 19th floor with a better view. This was a room that they sold for $45/night. He was excited, and told me immediately that the sandwich worked.
When I arrived, I also handed the man at the counter the sandwich. He went through the usual information confirmations.

Man: Will you be staying 2 nights with us sir?
Me: Yes.
Man: I see you booked a room with a king sized bed. Will you need a room with a king bed?
Me: Yes, I do need the king.
Man: If you are okay with two queens, I can upgrade you to a room on a higher level, with great views.
Me: Sorry, I do need the king. We have a baby that will be sleeping in the bed.
(He struggled a bit, went on typing.)
Man: You sure you need the king? Two queens won't work?
Me: Sorry, the baby will fall off the bed.
Man: Two nights right?
Me: Yes.

Handoff
The man handed me my ID and credit card and gave me the "I took care of you" wink. He filled out the room key packet and sent me my way.

The goods
So, for $25/night, I had booked a 600sqft room with a king bed and no view. The room I got, if you can call it a room, was a 1600sqft suite with an entry, dining room, livingroom, giant bedroom, and bathroom with jetted tub, walk-in closet, the works! It was on the 15th floor, so view was decent.

I was once a skeptic, but now, am a believer of the power of the sandwich!
