Host Department No More!
  4/7/2009 4:50:36 AM

After being with Host Department for several years, I've decided to move on...  The main reason...  Price increase on an outdated hosting service...

After these years, this is the first time that I did not enjoy looking for a hosting company.  Maybe that might be because I got slightly spoiled with seeing how my site performs on cloud...

If I could afford to do so for a personal site, I would go with GoGrid.com's cloud hosting.  They offer everything one would want in a virtual hosting plus more.  With GoGrid.com, you can setup various Windows server images, and Linux images.  They also offer a load balancing gateway.  I did look into Mosso.com.  Their service looks cool and all, but they do not offer the ability to remote into the server.  That's an issue for me.  I do plan to use GoGrid.com for a business account.  They do offer the ability to grow.

As for my personal site, the hosting company that will host BOOGIELAND, I looked, and tried several.  After days of searching, I decided to try mochahost.com.  What a mistake!  The first thing that went wrong was their automated account creation script made some mistakes creating my account.  When I submitted a ticket to their support department, instead of listening to my problem, they treated me like I didn't know what I was doing.  They didn't even try to answer my questions.  After 12 hours, they still could not get my site running.  That was my cue to checkout of there.

The next company I tried was Arvixe.com.  Their service was quite nice.  I have to say, they are good people.  Great rates too.  The only reason I decided not to use them at the end was because they do not allow remote access to their DBs.  Actually, they do allow it, but with specified IP's only.  With my current coding habbits, I actually connect to the live DB.  Not being able to connect to it from my relatively mobile system was painful for me.  They were nice enough to credit back on the same day that I requested to cancel.  Mochahost.com is still holding my money.

I finally landed on Reliablesite.net.  It's a Canadian company.  Their support is quite nice.  For what I need, this does make sense.  It doesn't offer the huge combo deals like typical US hosting plans.  That's just fine for me.  The basic combo + upgrades fit me quite well.  I don't need to pay for the hundreds of email accounts that I never use.  Within a few hours, I am already writing my first blog on their server.  I only took so long because I even took the time to migrate my DB's over.  On top of moving the DB's, I even combined 2 DB's into one.

Well, it's yet to be determined how well Reliablesite.net will do.  We shall see...
