Google Web Accelerator?
  10/31/2007 4:43:14 PM

Several months ago, I was baited to try the Google Web Accelerator.  Having no idea what it is and what it does, I took it at face value.  I assued it's suppose to accelerate my web experience.  After installing it, a new toolbar was added in my IE with a little clock-like icon.  Down in the tool tray, there is also one denoting a service running.  The only thing I paid attention was the number next to the icon in the browser.  Google likes to tell me that this application has been saving me time.  To do so, it tallies the amount of time saved, and displays it next to the icon in the browser.  1.8 hours saved.  It sounds great!

Little did I know...  Today, I did a speed test at www.speedtest.net.  I was shocked my download speed came back at 460kbps.  I ran about 10+ tests, and they all came in at those numbers.  To put the numbers in perspective, my internet service is provided by Time Warner Cable.  I even paid for the upgraded premium service, which peaks at 8Mbps.  My normal tests run at 7,800+kbps.  I will have the occational 7900+kbps.  Without hesitation, I called up the cable company thinking that they might have some outages or delays.

We went through almost 1 hour debugging, but could not figure out what it is that is causing this slow-down.  While on hold for the tier-3 customer service rep, I went through anything else that is still running on my computer.  Tier-2 already requested me to reset my IE 7, and disable virus protection, firewall, etc.  While searching, I came across Google Web Accelerator.  I decided, since I could not figure out what it was doing, and how it was helping me speed things up, that I would just uninstall it.

As soon as I did, I decided to run the test again.  BOOM!  Back to 7800+kbps.  What is Google really doing when they have a product with the name "web accelerator?"
