How does one spot the iceberg from the Titanic?
  2/17/2010 2:42:49 PM

Recently, I've been having some thoughts. Though these thoughts originated from a specific incident, they definitely apply to general occasions. The Titanic just made it easier to explain my thoughts.

How does one spot the iceberg from the Titanic?  I asked the same question on Facebook, and got some interesting responses. To answer this question, maybe it's easier to ask another. How does one not spot the iceberg from the Titanic? Here are some observations about me of why I might not spot the iceberg.

  • Titanic will never sink!
There is often too much trust in what I am doing. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that people should not be confident in what they do. However, too often, we are victums of our own doing. Even when we've spotted the iceberg, our denial, or our pride get in the way, and say, we can handle it.
  • Titanic is the ultimate party boat.
The purpose of Titanic was to show off its glory and to take some of the social elites on an epic voyage. Everyone on the ship was focused on having a good time. Speaking from experience, us guys are especially prone to this. We can get so focused on the task at hand that we lose sight of what's ahead. The whole crew were so busy making sure the passangers were taken care of that they forgot to watch what's happening around them.
  • Stay on course!
Similar to being focused in what we do, we, men, are goal oriented people. We set our targets, and we go at it full-force. I am not speaking against goal oriented people, nor dedication. I myself am very goal driven. However, have we been so wrapped up with the course that we lost sight of the goal? Another words, are we so focused on the GPS telling us what to do at the next intersection that we forgot where we were going? What happens if there's a detour? Do we trust the GPS, because it can never be wrong, or do we see the detour, acknowledge the detour, and follow the detour until we can get back on course? Navigational instructions, or directives from superiors are important in helping us arrive. But even with the best GPS in the world, I bet you won't go on the road with blinders on.
So, how does one spot the iceberg front the Titanic?

WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING!

Sometime the simplest things are what gets us. In all we do, if we are not watching what's ahead of us, we could easily steer ourselves into an iceberg. When combined with this simple instruction, the above listed characters change from character flaws to strengths. Watching where we are going helps us to stay on course. Watching where we are going helps us to keep doing what we need to.  Watching where we are going keeps us from failing. Confidence only comes when you've got all your bases covered, especially where you are heading.

Good thing watching where I'm going helped me spot my iceberg form my Titanic.
